Review

Known for his Oscar-winning work on “Green Book,” director Peter Farrelly takes a humorous turn in “Ricky Stanicky,” a movie about the ongoing friendship of childhood friends. By deftly manipulating the camera, Farrelly grounds the story in the protagonists’ companionship and captures the spirit of friendship.

Even though it’s entertaining, the movie follows a well-worn plot that won’t be shocking to viewers. The lack of intellectual creativity in the screenplay co-written by Farrelly, Jeff Bushell, Brian Jarvis, James Lee Freeman, Pete Jones, and Mike Cerrone keeps the film from reaching the heights of a wild comedy that one might anticipate from a director of Farrelly’s caliber. The 108-minute duration, however, keeps viewers interested, making it a great one-time watch.

At the beginning of the story, Zac Efron, Andrew Santino, and Jermaine Fowler, who play three boyhood friends named Dean, JT, and Wes, respectively, find themselves in a difficult situation following a botched prank. In an attempt to avoid difficulties, they summon Ricky Stanicky, an imaginary friend.

Twenty years later, the three still use Ricky as an excuse for their prankish behavior. But when their wives become suspicious and insist on meeting the elusive Ricky, the pals turn to former WWE wrestler John Cena’s character, washed-up actor Rod, for assistance in making their fictional friend come to life.

As Ricky, nicknamed Rod, Cena gives a compelling performance that gives the movie a boost of enthusiasm and quickens its tempo for greater enjoyment.

As the story progresses, Rod’s enthusiastic acceptance of the part causes the trio’s plan to unexpectedly go off course and become more fiction than fact. The subsequent mayhem sparks a string of amusing incidents that give the otherwise simple plot some dimension.

The picture succeeds in entertaining even though it doesn’t have any novel ideas because of the charm of its actors and director Michael Farrelly. Even though “Ricky Stanicky” comes in a somewhat predictable humorous package, it serves as a reminder of the perennial power of friendship.

Finally, the Cena and Efron-starring comedy is a worthwhile one-time movie that will make you chuckle and take you back to a period when mischievous kids had consequences as adults. ‘Ricky Stanicky’ manages to provide an enjoyable experience for anyone looking for a lighter diversion, even though it might not be groundbreaking.
