The synopsis of the film Vaazhvu Thodangumidam Neethanae

A girl who comes from a traditional Muslim family develops feelings for another female who works as a documentary filmmaker. Are they able to live in peace?

 Movie Review:

In the South, there aren’t many movies dealing with the touchy subject of same-sex couples. Therefore, it is encouraging to watch a movie that dares to tackle the subject, such as Vaazhvu Thodangum Idam Neethane. The main conflict of the movie, involving a conservative family that rejects their daughter’s same-sex relationship, eventually gives way to a fairly traditional love story with gender roles reversed. If the author had truly entered their world and shown us the struggles they faced more genuinely, it would have been a powerful read.

The main character of the movie, Vinodha (Sruthi Periyasamy), is an adventurous documentary filmmaker who visits a community that resembles a harbor to record the life of the locals. While filming her documentary, she stays at the home of a hardline Muslim leader in the community with whom she collaborates. Niranjana Neithiar plays Shakira, the leader’s daughter, who becomes attracted to Vinodha after being moved by her fearless attitude. Vinotha also develops feelings for Shakira, and their romance grows. But the family fiercely opposes it after learning about their relationship. The remainder of the novel is about how the couple overcomes these obstacles and deals with criticism from their family and society.

Vaazhvu Thodangum Idam Neethane’s daring attempt to convey the story of a same-sex relationship is its USP, but it isn’t able to leave a lasting impression. The movie becomes a patience test despite its short running length, with tedious passages that need a lot of attention. The romantic moments are unconvincing and fail to elicit empathy from us for either party. Furthermore, the short-film-style approach lessens the impact even further. Another major disappointment is the soundtrack.

But the screenplay in the opening scenes is the only thing that holds up. The film opens with a really interesting introduction to a man named Irfan and his romantic journey. It only delves into Shakira’s past and story after a few minutes. The main actors gave respectable performances that were appropriate for their parts.

Vaazhvu Thodangum Idam Neethane is a mediocre attempt at narrating a story about same-sex relationships, despite its daring subject matter.
