MSI MPG Z790 EDGE Ti Max WiFi Motherboard

The 14th generation of Intel’s Raptor Lake Processors was introduced last year, marking the third iteration of the LGA 1700 socket. This resulted in a wave of updated motherboards, such as the MSI Z790 MAX line of boards. We’ll examine one such update, the MSI MPG Z790 EDGE Ti-Max WiFi motherboard, in more detail in our review. This new MSI motherboard offers some extra capabilities over last year’s already top-of-the-line Z790 boards, and it supports natively Windows 10, 13, and 14th generation Intel CPUs.

Design

From an aesthetic perspective, the MSI MPG Z790 EDGE Ti-Max WiFi looks almost exactly like the Z790 model that it replaced. Still, a small distinction becomes apparent with the RGB accents on the I/O shroud. Except for the upgrade to a more contemporary Wi-Fi 7 (which replaces the older Wi-Fi 6E), the I/O is mostly identical. This MPG Z790 EDGE Ti-Max WiFi board’s internal and external I/O is displayed in the following table.

CPU: Intel Core i9-14900K

SSD 02: Crucial P1 500GB (Gen3 NVMe)
RAM: Kingston Renegade Fury 48GB DDR5 @7200MT/s (Dual Channel)
SSD 01: Kingston Renegade Fury 2TB (Gen4 NVMe)
SSD 03: Western Digital SN550 (Gen3 NVMe)
GPU: MSI RTX 4070 Super Gaming X Slim
PSU: Antec NeoECO NE1000G M (80+ Gold Certified)

Features

Under the hood, the MSI MPG Z790 EDGE Ti-Max WiFi has a powerful processor. This board’s voltage regulator module supplies 16 +1 +1 (Vcore+VCCGT+VCCAUX) phase power to the CPU. which we tried with the i9-14900K, and the CPU held steady throughout Prime95’s 20-hour stress test. A PCIe Gen5 slot on the top-most M.2 SSD slot, which is directly connected to the CPU via the shortest lanes feasible, is one of this board’s other noteworthy characteristics. Furthermore, MSI’s EZ M.2 clamps, which don’t require any tools or screws, make SSD installation simple. Sadly, even though tool-free installation and double-sided cooling are featured, they are limited to the top M.2 slot.

We shifted our focus to the BIOS of the EDGE Ti-Max WiFi that comes with the V1. I updated the 10 that came out of the box to V1. 4. There is MSI EZ Mode for those who do not care about fine-tuning or do not want to delve into these issues. This mode can be used to connect fans to a network, set individual fan speeds, set boot priority, and even invoke XMP. There is now an advanced mode that you can activate by left-clicking on the title in the top center that says “ADVANCED” or by simply pressing F7. Advanced BIOS is what you can call the real solution because here you can change your settings to get better values, increase the load, and even enable or disable Hyper-Threading and increase or decrease the voltage. The modern system allows you to control exactly the instruments of the ensemble.

Performance

After the PC was properly assembled, we obtained some striking numbers. The benchmarks we recorded for the hardware configuration of this MSI MPG Z790 EDGE Ti-Max WiFi are as follows:

Benchmark Scores
Cinebench R23 ST
Cinebench R23 MT
2302
39785
Cinebench 2024 ST
Cinebench 2024 MT
135
2182
PCMark 10
PCMark 10 Extended
9724
13696
Geekbench ST
Geekbench MT
3137
21230
Time Spy Score 21406
Time Spy Extreme Score 10631
Fire Strike Score 41113
Fire Strike Extreme Score 24914
Fire Strike Ultra Score 13009

In short, this score shows the performance of the system where the Intel CPU reaches its maximum clock speed, thanks to the addition of a 360 mm AIO for efficient cooling. It was also revealed that the RTX 4070 Super shows its full potential by taking full advantage of the PCI-E Gen5 X16 high-speed slot on the motherboard. Combined with the Gen4 Renegade’s fast storage and 7200MT/s RAM, the experience was nothing short of phenomenal. And for the picky reader: yes, populating MC1 (about M.2 slots per CPU) makes PCI-E X16 work like PCI-E X8. However, in Gen5, there will be no overclocking problems even with a powerful card like 4090, let alone the 4070 Super. So we’re all good at sharing the line. Additionally, these benchmark scores along with gaming delta are detailed in our MSI Gaming X Slim White RTX 4070 graphics card video review.
