There’s more to the story than meets the eye when renowned film producer Jonathan Siegel hires private detective John Sugar to locate his missing granddaughter.

Sugar‘ is a unique criminal series that distinguishes itself from the current wave of mystery thrillers available on streaming services. Despite taking place in a modern location, its noirish tone gives it a distinct flavor by taking viewers to a different age. It fulfills every requirement for an engrossing mystery-crime thriller, captivating viewers from start to finish. But as the show comes to a close, a few unanswered questions and a startling revelation about Colin Farrell leave fans perplexed and a little down. Although noteworthy, the series‘ central revelation is somewhat overshadowed by the finale announcement, leaving viewers with a sense of disappointment.

The main character of the show is John Sugar (Colin Farrell), a traveling private investigator who focuses on cases involving missing persons. The show opens with him wrapping up a case in Tokyo, after which he gets recruited right away to locate his missing granddaughter, Olivia Siegel (Sydney Chandler), by famed film director Jonathan Siegel (John Cromwell). Sugar is adamant about handling the case even though his associate and friend Ruby (Kirby) expresses concerns about his physical and psychological condition. The Siegel family becomes alarmed as disturbing facts come to light as Sugar continues her inquiry.

What makes this series special are the well-developed characters. John Sugar, in particular, is characterized by a unique character that sets him apart. He is compassionate and does maintenance on a homeless man’s car before arriving just to help him, and then pays him for the job. Despite her job, Sugar avoids risks wherever possible. Additionally, his high metabolism makes him less immune to the effects of alcohol.

Colin Farrell’s portrayal of Sugar brings flair to’s character and delivers the scene perfectly. John Cromwell gives a convincing performance as Jonathan Siegel. Sydney Chandler brings authenticity to the role of Olivia, but Amy Ryan’s portrayal of Melanie is truly outstanding. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Anna Gunn, but her role was unnecessary and wasted.

Using unique editing techniques to create a dark atmosphere, the series combines black and white images from the 1950s and 1960s, gaining everyone’s appreciation. The series expertly establishes its intentions for Sugar’s character from the beginning. John Sugar’s ability to connect with others through kindness is evident in the first episode. It would be a crime to reveal the big ending that sets the tone for the second season. The bread left behind by the film’s actors, such as Sugar, who admits that she has a lot to learn from people, will not keep the audience guessing the direction of the plot until the last act.

The revelations will also make you think about the series in a new way. Director Fernando Meirelles, known for films such as ‘The City of God‘ and ‘The Constant Gardener’, once again demonstrates his innovative and versatile directorial skills. ‘Sugar’ is exciting with atmosphere, great action, and a terrifying plot, but its ultimate impact depends on how well the audience responds to the revelations. With a touch of neo-noir style, ‘Candy’ has everything to please the audience. This series represents tradition and represents success.
