Review:

The captivating story of “Chamak” centers on Kaala (Paramvir Singh Cheema), a Canadian singer-turned-entrepreneur who travels back to his native Punjab to investigate the mysterious shooting murder of renowned singer Tara Singh (Gippy Garewal) during a live concert. Kaala embarks on a turbulent journey through the murky underbelly of the Punjab music business in pursuit of the truth.

After a turbulent past as a wanted man, Kaala returns to Punjab and discovers a startling truth: Tara Singh is his father and music is in his blood. But when it becomes out that his father was shot on stage years ago, Kaala is driven to find the real reason for the shooting and establish himself as a prominent figure in the Punjabi music scene. The main query that now arises is: Will he be able to solve the enigma surrounding his parent’s passing?

Produced and directed by Rohit Jugraj Chauhan, who is well-known for his work in Punjabi movies like “Sardaarji,” “Arjun Patiala,” and others, Jugraj and S Fakira’s non-linear script is notable for its captivating story twists. Although the attempt to create a musical thriller is praiseworthy, several plot points—such as Jazz (Isha Talwar) falling in love with Kaala and journalist Gurpal disclosing important information—might seem too easy. Still, ‘Chamak’ does a fantastic job of delving into the very dark sides of its characters, especially those of Pratap Singh Deol’s (Manoj Pahwa) troubled family.

As he navigates a path full of highs and lows, Paramvir Singh Cheema gives an engrossing depiction of Kaala that draws the viewer into his life narrative. Other notable performances include those of Manoj Pahwa, Isha Talwar as Jazz, Mukesh Chhabra as Dimpy, Mohit Malik as Guru, Suvinder Vicky as Jugal Brar, Akasa Singh as Brar’s daughter Lata, and Gippy Grewal in a special role as Tara Singh.

‘Chamak’ progressively captivates with its twists and turns and captivating soundtrack, even if it takes some time to completely interest the spectators. The six-hour odyssey comes to an abrupt end that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats and ensures that “Chamak” ends with a promise of more mystery and surprises to come.
