Review for The Old Stamp House Restaurant

In the center of the Lake District National Park, in Ambleside, is the Old Stamp House Restaurant, housed in the former workplace of William Wordsworth, one of the region’s most renowned and beloved locals. The group received a Michelin star in 2019.

Since its opening in 2014, the Old Stamp House crew has provided a distinctive taste of the culinary scene in our area. A speciality is the well-known and iconic Herdwick sheep that roam the surrounding fells, but we also take inspiration from the smaller fishing fleets at Barrow and Whitehaven to source as much local fish and shellfish as possible, as well as from the county’s lesser-known ports on the west coast, which have a long history of importing alcohol and spices. Morecambe Bay shrimp and Cartmel Valley game are also often favorites.

This eccentric little café is located in the cellars of an old home in the heart of the Lake District, where William Wordsworth once worked as the Westmorland Stamp Distributor. The Blackburn brothers, who currently own it, show their love of all things local in their “A Journey Around Cumbria” tasting menu. Ryan oversees the kitchen, while Craig handles the serving. Each of the expertly prepared dishes has a unique tale, sometimes personal, sometimes historical, and they are thoughtfully balanced between robust and delicate flavors.
