The Ideal Time To Go

The months of March through May and late September to mid-December are the ideal times to visit there. The weather is nice during the fall and spring-summer months, making them perfect for sightseeing. The days are sunny and offer unhindered views of the Himalayas from late September to mid-December. Rhododendron flower blooms, which occur from March to May, are a sight to behold. The monsoon months of July through early September are the worst times to visit it and the state of Sikkim because of the excessive rainfall that might trigger landslides, which can be quite inconvenient.

Ways to Get There

How to take a plane: The closest airport is 126 kilometers away, in West Bengal’s Bagdogra Airport. For transportation up to Gangtok, you can reserve a taxi in advance. For a lower cost, shared cabs are also offered between Bagdogra and Gangtok. From the Bagdogra airport, a cab ride to Gangtok takes about 4 hours.

How to travel by road: Gangtok and the rest of India are connected via National Highway 10, or NH10. The closest big city is Siliguri, West Bengal, from which buses and taxis run frequently.

How to take the train: New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri, which is around 117 kilometers from Gangtok, is the nearest railway station. From here, you can reserve or hire taxis to go to Gangtok. Major Indian cities are well-connected to New Jalpaiguri. The trip from New Jalpaiguri station to Gangtok takes about 4 hours.

Local transportation: Taxis are the most practical way to go around Gangtk because there are so many tourist attractions there. Additionally, there are inexpensive state-run buses that make it easier to commute inside the country. To travel to all of the nearby tourist destinations at comparatively low costs, one can also search for shared buses and jeeps.
