Review

Camden‘, which demonstrates Camden Town’s long-standing ties to the music industry, meets the criteria for being an educational documentary. This four-part documentary, which is produced and features Dua Lipa as one of the voices, tells the story of how Camden has been the birthplace of radical music, influencing musicians who have gone on to achieve enormous success. The documentary has unscripted conversations with musicians as well as historical footage from the 1970s and 1980s. Notably, it draws attention to the relationships Camden has with musicians like Chris Martin, Pete Doherty, and even American musician Questlove. ‘Camden‘ is a captivating movie for Generation Z due to its clever editing and star-studded cast, but older viewers might want to see it with caution.

As one of the voices in the series, Yungblud, puts it, “Camden has to be your starting ground if you’re a kid wanting to break into music.” The documentary’s four segments make an effort to support this claim, and they mostly succeed. Chris Martin and Dua Lipa of Coldplay talk about how they came to Camden after becoming enthralled with the city’s music scene in the first episode. In addition, Dua serves as a tour guide, showing visitors around Camden from her vehicle, highlighting her favorite locations, and discussing how the neighborhood influenced her development as an artist. Chris Martin looks back with fondness on how Camden served as a career stepping stone as well as a blessing. Essentially, just as Village serves as New York‘s musical hub, Camden has the same status in London.

As the documentary progresses, viewers are surprised by the number of stars associated with Camden. The area transformed the careers of music stars such as Amy Winehouse, Boy George, Little Simz, Questlove, Jazzie B, and Pete Doherty. It’s a long list that includes The Libertines, The Roots, Bob Dylan, Oasis, and Public Enemy. The documentary details how the Libertines became Camden’s rebels, following in the footsteps of The Clash and Oasis. One of the great features of Questlove Root. In a candid interview, he recalls how Gilles Peterson, owner of the Talkin’ Loud record label, discovered his band and changed its direction. Questlove remembers the tough times when gigs were scarce and fondly remembers the bond he shared with Amy Winehouse, including a visit to a bakery in Camden. The most poignant moment comes when he recalls the night he won the BAFTA and instructed the driver of the to go to Camden on the way to Heathrow, but turned back to his birthplace 30 years ago.

The film also focuses on famous bars that served as both sites for music executives to find new talent and as opportunities for up-and-coming bands, such as The Dublin Castle, The Good Mixer, and Camden Palace. The Libertines’ main singer and guitarist, Carl Barat, says that these lines were essential for starting bands during informal discussions. He tells the story of how his band tricked talent scouts into signing a record deal. The last episode also touches on the racism and homophobia that certain musicians experienced in passing. These celebrities’ early life stories are full of fascinating experiences.

The documentary is also a little strange in that Dua Lipa opens it, even though some other notable people are there as well. Is this just a benefit of being the producer? In addition, the series fails to address the reasons for Camden’s rise to prominence as a music hub and hotspot for artists, leaving these issues unresolved. Hardcore music aficionados may be left wanting more from the series, although it has many merits and presents a modern view of Camden. All things considered, “Camden” is a compelling film to watch.
