With its excellent production standards, talented cast of performers, breathtaking cinematography, and the weight of a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel as its source material, All the Light We Cannot See has all the makings of a prestige television program. But even with these outstanding components, the series falls short of expectations and doesn’t leave a lasting effect. With its implausible performances, this fictional historical drama is unable to convey the richness and nuance of its original material. Condensing the complex and nuanced story of the critically acclaimed novel into a four-part miniseries leads to a hurried and fragmented storytelling experience. The production team’s efforts are visible in the visually stunning series, but they fall short in bringing the story to life, which makes it seem a little lifeless.
The conversation frequently tends to be corny and falls short of expressing the complexity of the characters and their lives. The series falls short of its potential, even with names like Shawn Levy (“Stranger Things”) and Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”) behind the scenes.
The show may be suspenseful and intriguing, but it doesn’t make the most of these qualities.
